| Match-play begins with a win! - The Varsity played it's first match of the season yesterday against Herndon. The Concorde District match was played at Westfields Golf Club & resulted in a 155-156 triumph. The low round of the day beonged to Noori Hyun, who fired an even-par 35. Following close behind him was sophomore Keon ho "Chris" Song by carding a 1-over-par 36. Rounding out the scoring for the day were Shaan Kololgi (41) & Brett Green (43). |

| Bryan Gunter Memorial - After slipping to second in 2009, the Varsity team took back the Gunter title from a resilient Loudoun Valley team. The final margin of victory was only two strokes after finishing round 1 at Winchester Country Club with a 6 stroke lead. Team members scoring in round 1 were Noori Hyun (65), Chris Upham (73), Marria Cho (83), & Keon ho Song (83). Round two was contested at Rock Harbor, which proved to be a much more demanding track. Noori fired a 3-under 69 to follow his 7-under performance from Thursday. Keo ho Song rebounded with a 77, while Chris Upham had a great back nine to scramble for a 79. Freshman MacKenzie Kim scored an 85 to follow up her 83 from the Stallion Invitaion the previous week. In the individual category, Noori shot 65-69 (-10) to earn his third straight Billy Phillips award for the top individual player.Chris Upham rounded out the medalist podium with a 73-79 (+9) garnering him a 5th-place finish. |
| Girls' Northern Region Ice-Breaker - After rain prevented play on Wednesday, the girls took to Twin Lakes Friday afternoon. Antoinette Roland carded the low round of the day for the Lady Wildcats with a solid 51. Antoinette finished tied for 5th in the 9-hole flight. Gina Masters & Jacqueline Hogg shot 57 & 75, respectively. Sadly, Katie Rouleau took an errant shot to the hand from a drive off the 17th tee while playing the 11th hole. She played two more holes after receiving some medical attention, but the swelling took over & prevented her from finishing. So, please give her your best if you have the chance. |

| 9th Annual Curly Licklider Memorial Tournament - Congrats to the players who competed yesterday in the Licklider sponsored by Warren County High School out in Front Royal. After a very long day w/ a weather delay & scattered showers, we placed 2nd with a total score of 321. We were two strokes behind the winning team, Abermarle High School (319). Keon ho "Chris" Song led the team (75, +4), followed by Chris Upham (77, +6), Marria Cho (84, +13), & Shaan Kologi (85, +14). Chris Song actually finished in a four-way tie for 3rd place in the individual category, but was awarded 6th after the tie-breaker was used. All in all, consdering the heat, rain, delays, & pace of place, it was an excellent start to the season. Nice job! |
| Need any new equipment? - An e-mail was sent out yesterday concerning an order we're going to place on Sunday from the TaylorMade-Adidas high school purchase program. Please check your inbox & let us know if you'd like to order something such as shoes, gloves, balls, practice apparel, etc. This will be the ONLY time will we will place a team order, so if you want to hop on-board & share the shipping & handling amonst your teammates & take advantage of the discounts, please get your request in by Sunday evening. |
| What do you have in your bag? - We all know we have the essentials such as clubs, balls, tees, gloves, etc. But, do you have some of the other things that many of us don't think about? Take a look at the checklist below & make a shopping list: |
 |
Sharpie or other marker - You need one of these to mark your ball. While you should always know the brand & make of ball you're playing (i.e. Titleist Pro-V1), as well as the number on the ball (usually 1-4) , it's a must to have an identifying or unigue mark on it as well. A dot or two, line, or your initials will do just fine. If you want to get creative, there's a company out of Fall Church that makes a personal imprinting system that only requires the use of a Sharpie to use. Coach Bigus saw them being sold down in Myrtle Beach. You may want to check them out: www.tin-cup.com |
 |
Divot repair & ball-mark - You absolutely need both of these during practice & play. The general rule is that when you get to the green, you should repair your ball-mark (no matter how small) & one more (from someone who wasn't as considerate). With all the play Westfields gets from recreational players, we should do our part to keep the course in great shape. I know the management appreciates it. If you don't know how to repair a ball-mark, ask coach or a teammate. Westfields has free divot-repairs in the proshop if you need one. A ball-mark is any flat object (such as a coin) you use to mark your ball on the green so other can putt w/o distractions or obstructions. You can get a repair tool with a ball-mark attached. |
 |
Golf umbrella - You don't need this everytime out, but it'd be a great idea to bring one along just in case you may need it. You can always take it out of you bag before play & place it in coach's cart for use if the weather gets dicey. There's also something called a "drizzle-stick" that's a mini-umrella you slide into your bag to cover your clubs. This isn't an essential, but it's an option to keep your clubs dry. |
 |
Extra towels - You should have at least one towel (if not two) attached to your bag. These are used to keep your clubs & ball clean & sometimes to dry your hands. Plan to bring a few extra on days where rain is one the menu. If you need a towel, let us know & we can get you one as we've got extras from the Boosters' tournament. |
 |
Rain gloves - Many of us don't think about these until it's too late. Get a pair & leave them in your bag for days when it's wet. They are available on the TaylorMade-Adidas website for $15.00 (regular price = $24.99). It's also a good idea to have an extra regular glove in case yours gets torn, worn-out, wet, or lost on the course. |
 |
Range-finder - This is an expensive item, but it's a great luxury if you want to improve your game. it's also a great tool to help speed up play as you don't need to search for yardage markers or pace off yardage. Some of our tournaments & matches allow them, some don't. If you do plan to get one, make sure it's tournament legal (meaning it doesn't measure slope or wind speed). Note: Coach has one for sale if you're interested. It's a brand-new Bushnell V2 (w/o slope). He got it for $250 (regularly $300) & will be returning it soon unless someone wants it. |
 |
Snacks - Have something in your bag that you can snack on if you get hungry. We suggest granola bars, trail mix, or energy bars. Try to stay away from things that will melt (such as chocolate M&M's in trail mix or the original Power Bars) or leave your hands sticky. Be weary of food with high amounts of sodium as it will pull water from your muscles & leave you dehydrated, bloated, & sluggish. We highly suggest almonds, but not the salted ones. They've got flavored ones on the market that are lower in sodium. Consider: (1) cocoa-roast or (2) cinnamon. |

| Check your tee-time! - Please take a look at the revised tee-times for Friday's round 2. Things were shuffled around a little to take into account how everyone played on Wednesday. For the most part, the players with the lower scores are going off in the earlier groups. Pace of play on Friday will be critical as it would be great to try to sneak in more than 9 holes (shooting for at least 11 or 12). |

| Update on Tryouts - Listed below is the new & improved schedule for tryouts. Please refer to the handout distributed at the Aug 2 team meeting for the tryout format, rules, & expectations. If you lost your copy, please e-mail Coach Bigus & he'll send you a new copy. Players listed in GREEN are good to go as their physicals have been turn-in. Players listed in RED still need to get their physicals turned in before they can tee-off. We will start with an hour-long practice session at Westfields (30 min range, 30 putt/ship) on Tuesday, Aug 3. We will then play three 9-hole rounds on Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday with the players shooting for Varsity going off first. The tee-times for Saturday will be based on performance during rounds 1 & 2. |

| Tryouts begin tomorrow - The 2010 season starts with a team meeting tomorrow - Monday, Aug 2 - in trailer 18 at 9:30am. If you plan to tryout, this meeting is mandatory as you'll need to be present to receive a tee-time for round 1 of tryouts on Tuesday, Aug 3. We'll be collecting physcials & emergency care cards if you haven't already submitted them. We will also review the tryout format & expectations, as well as the schedule for this first week & for some of the season. |
| Tournament opportunity - Here's an opportunity we hope most of you will consider. This is a great opportunity to get some invaluable tournament experience at a course that is not only super-close, but where we actually play this season's match vs. Westfields. The cost is $54.00 & you must have a valid VSGA/GHIN number (which you get when you register with a VSGA member club in order to establish a handicap). The entry deadline is Monday, Aug 16. As of right now, there are about 38 slots still open to play. I know this because I just registered to play yesterday. This will be my first foray back into competitive golf since high school (not counting scrambles & other fun-like tournaments). So, if you sign-up & beat me, I'll buy you dinner right there at Chantilly National afterwards. And, just so you know, I'm working on getting a practice round for the team there before the 30th, so you'll have at least one look at the course before you play it. |

Please keep in touch with the team website to confirm these dates, as well as stay updated just in case a meeting needs to be moved. Your homework for the next meeting (Wednesday, July 14) is to: (1) read the Goal-Setting & Concentration factsheets, (2) create a set of personal goals for the 2010 season by using the guidelines in the goal-setting factsheet, & (3) obtain & read "Every Shot Must Have a Purpose" (Nilsson & Marriot) & "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect" (Rotella). make sure to have your set of goals (in writing) for the next team meeting. You may also want to check the tryout roster to see that all infomration posted is correct. |
